GUWAHATI: In a successful operation against terrorism, Assam Police arrested two suspected militants belonging to the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), an affiliate of the terror outfit Al Qaeda, in Guwahati on Monday.
The individuals, identified as Bahar Mia and Rarely Mia, were arrest from Guwahati Railway station, as confirmed by the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Assam Police.
According to the CPRO, Bahar (30) hails from Darkar village in Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria district, while Rarely (40) is a resident of Mongalsidha village in the neighbouring country’s Netrokona district.
The suspects, both Bangladesh nationals, were found to be residing illegally in India without possessing valid passports and were reportedly obtaining Indian documents through fraudulent means.
Authorities recovered several incriminating documents, including Aadhar and PAN cards, from the possession of the arrested individuals.
It has been alleged that the duo had visited Guwahati with the aim of mobilising and radicalising vulnerable Muslim youth to join the terror outfit.
A case has been filed at the Special Operations Unit (SOU) police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Indian government, forgery, and fraudulent use of documents.
The suspects also face charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920, and the Foreigners Act, 1946.
The arrests follow closely on the heels of the recent arrest of three individuals suspected of illegal entry into India in Dharmanagar, North Tripura.
Earlie ron April 30, these individuals, identified as Manju Ali, Rashel Ahmed, and Md Fahim, were suspected of illegally entering India without proper documentation.
Notably, Assam Police has intensified its efforts to arrest people involved in such terrorist activities, with at least 16 arrests made between March and April 2022 alone.
