Guwahati: Assam Police arrested two individuals on Monday for allegedly defrauding job seekers by promising them government positions in exchange for large sums of money.
The accused, identified as Shamim Ahmed and Nabajit Barman, were reportedly running a forum for specially-abled individuals, where they collected substantial amounts from victims under the false pretense of securing government jobs.
According to a senior police official, Ahmed and Barman charged Rs 3-4 lakh from each victim, claiming to facilitate government sector jobs.
The police had been tracking their activities for several days before making the arrests.
The duo has been brought to Panbazar police station in Guwahati for questioning, and a case has been filed against them under relevant sections of the law.
In light of these events, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the state government’s transparent approach to recruitment.

Over the past three years, the state has provided more than 1.25 lakh jobs, with plans to exceed 1.7 lakh by the time of the next assembly election.
Sarma emphasised that no malpractices have been reported in the recruitment process, calling it the most transparent job initiative in Assam’s history.
He further stated, “In 2021, we promised 1 lakh jobs to Assam’s youth. Today, we have surpassed that, with 1.25 lakh jobs already filled. Our government is committed to providing more opportunities, and by 2026, we aim to create 1.7 lakh jobs.”
He also expressed confidence that no previous Assam government had provided such a high number of jobs in a single tenure, with every appointment carried out without any complaints of malpractice.
