“This is special for me, as Sualkuchi is part of my constituency. Do visit the next time you are here!” he said.
CM Sarma encouraged visitors to explore Sualkuchi for its rich cultural heritage and exquisite silk products.
Located in Kamrup district, Sualkuchi has earned the title “Manchester of the Assam” due to its centuries-old tradition of silk weaving.
The textile centre of Assam is situated on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra, about 35 km from Guwahati. The town is famous for producing unique varieties of silk namely the golden muga, mulberry silk, and warm eri silk, with the weaving techniques passed down through generations.
Mekhela chadors and Gamosas, crafted from these indigenous materials, are sought after both domestically and globally.
It is one of the world’s largest weaving villages where the entire population is engaged in weaving exquisite silk fabrics.
The silk-weaving tradition in Sualkuchi dates back to the 11th century during the reign of King Dharma Pal of the Pala dynasty who brought 26 weaving families from Tantikuchi to Sulakuchi, which took the shape of a weaving village.
This recognition highlights Sualkuchi’s contribution to both Assam’s tourism and textile industries.
