Dibrugarh (Assam): Security forces have apprehended Rupam Asom, a senior leader of the banned militant outfit ULFA (Independent), from a forested area along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, police confirmed on Saturday.
Authorities also recovered arms and ammunition during the operation. According to police sources, Rupam was allegedly orchestrating ULFA(I)’s extortion network across parts of eastern Assam.
He had previously been named in a National Investigation Agency (NIA) chargesheet for his alleged involvement in the 2018 killing of Bhaskar Kalita, the officer-in-charge of Bordumsa Police Station.
“Rupam Asom was the key figure behind extortion operations in eastern Assam,” said a police official.
“Based on intelligence inputs suggesting he and his team were hiding in a jungle near the interstate border, a targeted operation was launched on Friday night, resulting in his arrest.”
Following the arrest, security forces have intensified operations in the bordering region to locate and detain other ULFA(I) operatives still at large.
