GUWAHATI: In her inaugural poll campaign as Chief Minister of West Bengal in Assam, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee asserted that if the INDIA bloc secures victory, there will be no place for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state.

Speaking at a spirited rally in support of TMC candidate Radheshyam Biswas at Silchar’s Townclub ground, Banerjee unequivocally declared, “Under the INDIA bloc’s rule, there will be no National Register of Citizens (NRC), no Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and no Uniform Civil Code. We will revoke all discriminatory laws.”

Renowned for her forthright demeanour, Banerjee launched a scathing critique at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Centre, accusing them of transforming the nation into a “detention camp.”

“They have turned the entire country into a detention camp… I have never witnessed such a perilous election in my lifetime,” she lamented.

Banerjee boldly stated that she and her party are not afraid of the BJP or national agencies, which she claimed the Narendra Modi-led government is using against the opposition.

She pointed out cases where her Assam counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma, reportedly filed many police cases against her while she was advocating for Bengali people in both states.

“What was my crime? Will you imprison me, execute me, or confine me to a detention camp? When 17 lakh Bengali Assamese were excluded out of 19 lakh from the NRC, I stood in solidarity with the people,” Banerjee passionately declared.

Taking a jibe at BJP’s manifesto and “Modi’s Gurantee”, she highlighted that the TMC rejects the notion of dividing people along religious lines.

“Their sole aim is to foment unrest in India. They can only offer one guarantee – riots will ensue after they plunder votes. They have exploited every corner of India and subjected women, Adivasis, farmers, and all marginalised communities to torment,” Banerjee asserted.

Without hesitation, Banerjee also chanted slogans of “Gali Gali mein shor hain, BJP chor hain. (Every street echoes the truth: BJP equals thievery)” during her address.

Earlier in the day, Banerjee was greeted at Silchar Airport by Assam TMC chief Ripun Bora and leader Sushmita Dev.
