GUWAHATI: In a stern response to a drunken brawl that unfolded at a bar in Guwahati, three students of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have been expelled from the institute for six months on Friday.
The expulsion follows the students’ involvement in a skirmish at a bar in Guwahati’s Christian Basti area on Thursday evening.
The expelled students are identified as Subhrangshu Saikia, an intern from Golaghat; Shashanka Kashyap, a final year student from Mangadoi; and Hrishikesh Bipaksha, a 3rd-year student from Hojai, confirmed GMCH Principal Achyut Ch. Baishya to the press.
“The three students have accepted that they went to drink at the bar. Since they have broken the hostel rules, the three of them have been expelled indefinitely on disciplinary grounds. Moreover, they have been expelled for six months from the institute,” Baishya told the press.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 pm on Thursday, with MBBS students from Hostel No. 4 allegedly getting intoxicated and assaulting the bar manager.
Subsequently, 15 more students from GMCH arrived at the bar, leading to a chaotic scene.
In response to the altercation, disciplinary measures have been initiated against these 15 students, resulting in their expulsion from the hostel for a period of three months.
Reports suggest that the bar management sustained critical injuries during the clash.
Addressing the situation, Baishya announced plans to install CCTV cameras at the hostel premises to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
He urged both college authorities and the police to collaboratively investigate the matter. Baishya said, “We will not have any objections to that.”
