In a major political development, suspended Congress MLA On Sherman Ali Ahmed joined the Raijor Dal on Tuesday, marking his departure from Assam’s primary opposition party.
Sherman Ali, MLA from Baghbor constituency, was formally welcomed into the Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi at a joining program held in Barpeta district’s Kalagachia today.
Throughout his political journey, Ahmed, a former government official, transitioned from AIUDF to Congress before this latest switch, which is poised to influence the upcoming post-delimitation state assembly elections.
Addressing the gathering, Ahmed said he will be seeking nomination from the Mandia constituency in the assembly elections, the first to be held in the state post-delimitation.
As per reports, more than 5000 people attended the programme, marking a major show of support.

In a post on social media, Akhil Gogoi informed that over 100 people, including office bearers from AIUDF and various other political parties and organizations also joined the Raijor Dal.
On Monday, three-time MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal and Dulal Chandra Barua, chief adviser of the Tai Ahom Students’ Union formally joined the Raijor Dal.
Addressing party workers, Akhil Gogoi claimed that within the coming week, two BJP MLAs from Upper Assam will also join the Raijor Dal. Gogoi further claimed that one AGP MLA and five AIUDF legislators have also been in touch regarding a possible switch, though no decision has been taken.
