GUWAHATI: A promising student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, identified as Aishwarya, met a tragic end due to alcohol overdose at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).
As the nation welcomed the new year, Aishwarya and three of her friends, all fellow students at IIT Guwahati, engaged in a celebratory evening at a pub in Guwahati’s Paltan Bazar on December 31.
The revelry continued into the night as they later checked into a nearby hotel room in an inebriated state.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the Central Police District, Amitabh Basumatary, told the press, “After an evening of celebration at Paltan Bazar, the girl and her companions sought refuge in a hotel in the early hours. Come morning, she faced breathing difficulties, prompting her friends to rush her to GMCH for medical aid. Unfortunately, the resident physicians declared her deceased.”
Informing that the incident has been reported to the authorities at IIT Guwahati, DCP Basumatary stated that the routine procedure involves subjecting the deceased’s body to a post-mortem examination.
Originating from Telangana, the young student’s untimely demise casts a pall of grief over the institute.
As the investigation unfolds, the students who were accompanying the deceased have been allowed to return to the IIT Guwahati campus.
At present, no one has been detained in connection with the case.
The authorities highlighted the importance of awaiting the autopsy results to ascertain the circumstances leading to this tragic incident that has left the IIT community in mourning.
While the family members of the deceased IIT-G student have not filed any case yet, the police disclosed that they await the official autopsy result.
