Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Tuesday took note of a petition by Left leaders requesting action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in relation to a viral video that allegedly shows him aiming and firing a rifle at members of a particular community.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N V Anjaria, heard submissions from advocate Nizam Pasha, who appeared on behalf of leaders from the CPI and CPI(M), and indicated that the matter would be examined for listing.
Pasha urged the court to intervene urgently, citing what he described as disturbing statements and visuals involving a sitting chief minister. He told the bench that complaints had been submitted to authorities but claimed that no FIR had been registered so far.
Responding to the request, the CJI said, “The problem is, as soon as elections come, part of the election is fought in the Supreme Court. That is the problem. We will find out and will give a date.”
The video, which was posted on the Assam BJP’s official X handle on February 7, purportedly shows Sarma aiming a rifle at two individuals, one wearing a skull cap and another sporting a beard. T
The post triggered sharp political reactions and public criticism, and was later removed by the BJP following allegations that it promoted violence and communal disharmony.
