Guwahati: A sudden storm coupled with heavy rain wreaked havoc in Guwahati on Sunday evening, causing widespread power outages, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions across the city.

The rainstorm, which lasted over an hour, brought the city to a standstill as strong winds and thunder toppled trees and power lines in several neighbourhoods, including Chandmari, Beltola, Zoo Road, and Maligaon.

Low-lying areas such as Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, and RG Baruah Road were severely waterlogged, with knee-deep water making streets impassable.

“I was stuck in traffic for over two hours near ABC Point due to waterlogging and a fallen tree,” said Ananya Sharma, a commuter who was caught in the chaos.

The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) reported that teams were working to restore power in affected areas.

Officials urged residents to remain indoors and avoid contact with fallen power lines for safety.

The storm’s impact extended beyond the city, as heavy rainfall and hailstones struck several districts of Assam, including Darrang, Nalbari, and Kamrup.

High-velocity winds tore apart tin roofs, uprooted trees, and submerged fields, leaving villages battered and vulnerable.

Farmers in these areas reported significant damage to crops, particularly Boro paddy and vegetables nearing harvest.

Meteorologists attributed the storm to a local weather disturbance typical of Assam’s pre-monsoon season, exacerbated by a sudden shift in upper air circulation and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.

“While such events are not uncommon in April, the intensity this time was unusual,” said a spokesperson from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati.

The storm marks the onset of pre-monsoon rain in the state, with the meteorological department predicting more isolated showers in the coming days.

As cleanup efforts begin, residents and authorities brace for potential further disruptions.
