GUWAHATI: Following the arrest of an IIT Guwahati student for allegedly pledging allegiance to terror outfit ISIS on social media, the Special Task Force (STF) Assam has detained his associate, Sohail Ur Rehman, for further interrogation.
A team from STF Assam, led by Kamrup Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Kumar Pathak, arrived at Lohit Hostel in IIT Guwahati to question Sohail and determine any potential links to the terrorist outfit.
Sohail, hailing from Jammu, is believed to be associated with Tauseef Ali Farooqui. Farooqui was arrested by Assam Police after posting an open letter supporting the terror group, on March 23.
In a subsequent development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had revealed that another IIT Guwahati student is under security agencies’ scrutiny.

“Both of them are completely radicalised. We have informed their parents and alerted Central agencies,” the chief minister had told the press.
Farooqui has been remanded in 10-day police custody by a lower court in Guwahati.
Post Farooqui’s arrest, the police have initiated an extensive investigation at IIT Guwahati to uncover further details regarding the terror group’s link.
This incident has raised concerns in the state about the radicalisation of intellectual students.
The IIT Guwahati student’s arrest follows the detention of Haris Farooqi, alias Harish Ajmal Farukhi, and his associate Anurag Singh, alias Rehan, in Dhubri district on March 20.
The duo, apprehended in the Dharmasala area of Dhubri after crossing from Bangladesh, are suspected to be deeply indoctrinated members of the terror group.
They are allegedly involved in activities including recruitment, terror funding, and orchestrating attacks across India.
