Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the Special Revision (SR) of the voters’ list will play a crucial role in removing illegal electors from the state’s electoral process.
The Election Commission on Monday directed a Special Revision of Assam’s electoral rolls.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Sarma said, “As NRC has not been notified in Assam due to various legacy issues, the Special Intensive Revision of the voters’ list has been temporarily deferred.”
“However, the Election Commission has ordered a Special Revision of the voters’ list. This will help us weed out illegal voters from our electoral process,” the chief minister said, assuring full cooperation from the state government.
He added that the revision exercise will ensure clean, accurate and updated voter rolls for all eligible citizens.
According to the Election Commission’s instructions to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, January 1, 2026, has been designated as the qualifying date for conducting the Special Revision.
The Special Revision stands somewhere between the annual special summary revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
