GUWAHATI: The Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS) roadshow was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal at Radisson Blu, Guwahati, on Thursday.
The roadshow that saw participation from neighbouring countries Bhutan and Bangladesh, also promoted regional collaboration highlighting the importance of a collective vision and enhanced connectivity within the maritime domain.
In his address, Minister Sonowal highlighted the evolving role of inland waterways as a vital alternative mode of transportation. He highlighted the substantial growth of the inland waterways sector, attributing it to the government’s visionary investments totalling ₹5200 crores since 2014, marking an impressive surge of over 200% in investment compared to the preceding 28 years.
“Inland waterways are powering the growth of the Indian economy. By investing in this clean, efficient, and economical mode of transportation, we are creating a collaborative ecosystem that fosters cooperation among neighbouring countries. This will unlock significant trade and commerce potential for all countries and states in the South Asia region,” said Minister Sonowal.
Minister Sonowal also emphasised the government’s commitment to transform Indian ports to global standards, propelling industrialisation, manufacturing, and ease of doing business.
The event was graced by various dignitaries including Minister of Transport, Fisheries & Excise Department, Govt. of Assam, Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Industries & Commerce and Public Enterprises, Cultural Affairs, Govt of Assam, Bimal Borah, Minister for Water Resources, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, Mama Natung and other dignitaries from the maritime sector.
The roadshow held in Guwahati is part of a series leading up to the main event, the Global Maritime India Summit 2023, scheduled for October 17-19, 2023, at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan in Delhi.
The Global Maritime India Summit 2023 roadshow has previously been held in Kolkata, Mangalore, Vishakhapatnam, and Goa, with upcoming roadshows planned in Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Kochi, Ahmedabad, and Bangalore.
