Guwahati: Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna announced on Sunday that Assam’s entire railway network will be electrified by the end of this year, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development.
During his visit to the Guwahati railway station, the minister reviewed ongoing development projects and was accompanied by Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and other senior officials.
“Before 2014, Assam had no railway electrification. Now, we are on track to achieve 100% electrification by the end of 2025,” Somanna stated, highlighting the progress made in recent years.
The minister also emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing railway infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, and boosting passenger convenience across the northeastern states.
He mentioned that doubling projects and the laying of new railway tracks are progressing rapidly to meet the region’s growing transportation needs.
The Guwahati railway station is undergoing redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with a budget of Rs. 181.09 crore.
Somanna conducted a thorough inspection of the station’s infrastructure, including waiting halls, QR code-enabled ticketing counters, and security measures.

He also visited the executive lounge and commended officials for maintaining cleanliness at the facility.
On Saturday, the minister inspected the Dibrugarh railway station, which is also being redeveloped under the same scheme.
He visited the iconic Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge, a key structure connecting Assam’s north and south banks over the Brahmaputra River and enhancing links to Arunachal Pradesh.
Somanna reiterated the government’s dedication to improving railway infrastructure and connectivity in the northeast, aiming to drive economic growth and better integrate the region with the rest of the country.
