GUWAHATI: Six weavers from the Northeast have been awarded the prestigious National Handloom Award and Sant Kabir Handloom Award 2023 by the Ministry of Textile.
Meghali Das from Assam, Vekuvolu Dozo from Nagaland, Nabam Yapi from Arunachal Pradesh, Nirmala Sinha from Tripura, and Mizoram’s Vanlalruati are the recipients of the National Handloom Award in weaving.
Notably, Wahengbam Shaya, a skilled artisan from Manipur, has been awarded the Sant Kabir Handloom Award for 2023, also known as the Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay Award.
The Sant Kabir Handloom Award is a national-level recognition that celebrates outstanding craftsmanship in the handloom sector.
She has received the award for her exceptional work in the traditional art of Inaphi weaving.
Nirmala Sinha, a 52-year-old divyang from Barasurma village in Tripura’s Dhalai district, has been chosen for the National Handloom Award for her exceptional contributions to handloom development.
Nirmala has showcased remarkable skill and dedication in weaving the traditional Manipuri attire, Enaphi, using natural dyes.
The Ministry of Textiles will honour her alongside 16 other talented artisans from various regions of India on August 7 during National Handloom Day celebration in New Delhi. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding weavers who have played a significant role in preserving the handloom heritage and sharing knowledge about traditional skills and designs.
