GANGTOK: Six tourists from Assam, who were traveling on motorcycles, were successfully rescued after being stranded in North Sikkim due to heavy snowfall, local authorities reported on Monday.
The group had been stuck in the Yakshe area, located approximately 10 kilometers from Lachung in the Mangan district, since Sunday night.
The situation was complicated by the presence of black ice on the roads, which made it impossible for the motorcycles to continue their journey.
As the snowstorm intensified, the tourists found themselves trapped in the harsh conditions.

In response, police personnel, with the help of local residents, coordinated a rescue operation to bring the stranded tourists to safety.
Following the rescue, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) swiftly cleared the road leading to Yumthang Valley by Monday morning, restoring access to the area.
Despite the clearing of the route, authorities have cautioned travellers to remain vigilant, as black ice continues to pose a significant risk.
Officials have advised that tourists check road conditions before embarking on their journeys and take all necessary safety precautions to prevent accidents, especially during the winter months when such hazards are prevalent.
