Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on tax evasion, seven businessmen in Assam have been arrested for allegedly transporting goods without proper documentation, according to an official release on Wednesday.
The Commissioner of State Goods and Services Tax (GST) stated that the accused, proprietors of transport and logistics businesses, were found violating the Assam GST Act, 2017.
An FIR has been filed against them for their involvement in the illicit movement of taxable goods.
Acting on intelligence inputs, teams from the GST Intelligence and Enforcement Wing conducted surprise inspections at the Azara Railway Yard, Guwahati, and Paltan Bazar Railway Yard on multiple occasions.
“So far, seven individuals have been apprehended. These arrests and the associated search and seizure operations aim to deter others from engaging in similar illegal activities,” the GST Commissioner’s statement read.
The investigations revealed that the accused were allegedly transporting large quantities of goods without necessary documentation, an act that also amounts to dealing with stolen property.

The statement further alleged that transporters and railway vendors involved in these transactions were guilty of criminal breach of trust, colluding with the consignees and consignors of the goods.
“This deliberate evasion of GST through undocumented transactions necessitates a thorough investigation into the movement of stolen goods and the systemic non-compliance by the arrested individuals and their associates,” the release concluded.
