GUWAHATI: The United Liberation Front of Axom-Independent (ULFA-I) has announced the death of Bubul Handique, known as Major Golap Axom, a leader in the proscribed outfit.

Handique has reportedly succumbed to cardiovascular-related ailments at approximately 2.58 pm on Thursday.

ULFA-I’s General cum Commander-in-Chief, Paresh Baruah, officially confirmed the incident in a statement, declaring Bubul Handique an “Immortal Martyr”

Hailing from Bhalukoni village in Mahmara, under the Charaideo district, Handique joined the banned militant outfit in 1998.

The news of his demise has cast a pall of gloom over his residence in Mahmara.

The deceased leader’s wife, while mourning the loss, expressed deep anguish over the lack of concrete information from the ULFA-I camp regarding Major Golap Axom’s death.

Earlier on November 23, security forces had apprehended one Achyutanand Neog, alias Niloy Asom, an active cadre of ULFA-I, believed to be the mastermind behind a recent grenade attack near an Army camp in Tinsukia on the night of November 22.

Niloy Asom, who joined the banned insurgent group with his wife in 2022, was detained by security forces, while reports indicate that his wife remains within the ULFA-I camp.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh had previously issued a stern warning, promising strict action against those responsible for the attack.
