It may be noted that the Hailakandi district administration launched a large-scale eviction drive on Monday to clear alleged encroachment over more than 2,800 bighas of reserved forest land at Damcherra, under the Gharmura forest range.
The operation will continue till February 4, initially affected 522 families. To ensure smooth execution, over 1,500 security personnel, along with nearly 200 Forest Department officials, were stationed on the ground to maintain law and order throughout the operation.
Officials stated that eviction notices were issued to residents of the area nearly two months ago. Following the notices, most families vacated the land voluntarily, allowing authorities to complete the initial phase of the drive with minimal resistance.
