The Sahitya Akademi on Monday announced the winners of the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2025, honouring outstanding literary works in 24 Indian languages.
Among the writers from Assam, Devabrat Das won the award in the Assamese language for his novel Karhi Khelar Sadhu. The book has been widely praised for its rich narrative and its portrayal of social realities in Assam.
In the Bodo language category, noted writer Sahaisuli Brahma was honoured for her novel Dwngnwi Lama Mwnse Gathwn. The work has been widely appreciated for its literary depth and portrayal of social themes within Bodo literature.
In a post on X, Assam Chief Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the awardees and wrote, “I am delighted that Assam’s literary brilliance has been recognised at the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2025. Congratulations to Shri Devabrat Das for Karhi Khelar Sadhu (Assamese) and Smt. Sahaisuli Brahma for Dwngnwi Lama Mwnse Gathon (Bodo), and I wish them continued success.”
The Sahitya Akademi awards this year cover a range of literary genres including poetry, novels, short stories, essays, literary criticism, autobiography and memoirs. Among the selected works are eight poetry collections, four novels, six short story collections, two essay volumes, one work of literary criticism, one autobiography and two memoirs.

The awards are conferred annually by the Sahitya Akademi following a selection process that involves recommendations by distinguished jury members for each language and approval by the competent authority of the Akademi. The process for the 2025 awards began in January 2025 with an open call for entries, the Ministry said.
Each awardee will receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shawl, and a cash prize at the award ceremony. The presentation ceremony for the awardees will be held in New Delhi on March 31, 2026.
