Guwahati: Eminent Assamese composer, lyricist, and educator Lakshyahira Das passed away on Saturday at the age of 94 due to age-related ailments, her family confirmed. She is survived by her three sons.
Das, a retired professor of education at the erstwhile Cotton College, carved a unique space in Assam’s cultural history.
In 1948, while still a college student, she became the first woman artist to receive All India Radio’s approval as a lyricist, composer, and singer.
Throughout her illustrious career, Das composed over 2,000 songs and continued to write lyrics for prominent singers well into her later years.
In addition to her musical achievements, she lent her voice to numerous compositions and authored more than 50 books, spanning poetry, children’s stories, short stories, translations, and educational works.
Her contributions earned her numerous accolades from the state government and various socio-cultural organisations.
Das was also an active member of esteemed literary bodies, including the Sahitya Akademi, Authors Guild of India, Poetry Society of India, and Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Das for her unparalleled contributions to Assam’s cultural and literary landscape.

“She worked tirelessly for the empowerment of women, and her works will inspire generations to come. My thoughts are with her family and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” he posted on X.
Union Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed his sorrow. “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Lakshyahira Das Baideu, whose heartfelt voice mesmerized countless listeners, including myself. Her invaluable contributions to Assam’s cultural and educational fields will always be remembered. My deepest condolences to her bereaved family and admirers. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” he said in a statement.
Lakshyahira Das leaves behind a legacy that continues to enrich Assam’s cultural and literary heritage.
