GUWAHATI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra commenced her campaign trail in Assam’s Jorhat on Tuesday, rallying support for party candidate Gaurav Gogoi ahead of the upcoming elections.
Upon her arrival in town, Vadra led a spirited rally, flanked by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Bhupen Bora and the party’s candidate from Jorhat, Gogoi.
Addressing a massive crowd, Vadra slammed the BJP-led central government’s implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), asserting that it contradicts the Assam Accord.
“When my father, Rajiv Gandhi, served as Prime Minister, we signed the Assam Accord, addressing the demands of the people and ensuring peace in Assam. However, today, the BJP government is enforcing the CAA, which goes against the Accord,” she remarked.
Urging the electorate to oppose the implementation of the Act, Vadra called upon the people to vote based on issues such as employment and peace, rather than along communal or religious lines.
“Send a clear message to the country that the people of Assam stand united against CAA’s legislation. Vote for Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi, who will be your representative, listening to your concerns and working to address them,” she added.
During her visit, Vadra also paid floral tributes to the statue of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and engaged in discussions with party workers.
Priyanka’s campaign in Assam holds significant importance for the Congress, aiming to consolidate its position in the state.
After her engagements in Jorhat, she is scheduled to proceed to Agartala later in the day, concluding her dynamic outreach efforts in the region.
As the political atmosphere in Assam intensifies, Priyanka’s active involvement is poised to inject fresh momentum into the Congress’ electoral strategy, reinforcing their narrative and mobilising support ahead of the crucial polls.
