GUWAHATI: Three schoolgirls, who had been reported missing since February 17, were found and rescued by the police in Guwahati on Tuesday.
The joint efforts of Pragjyotishpur Police and Panikhaiti Police led to the successful recovery of the girls.
The minors were found in Kamalajari Gaon village, situated in the Sonapur subdivision of Kamrup Metropolitan district, on the outskirts of Guwahati city.
Following their rescue, authorities questioned the girls to ascertain the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.
The girls, identified as Riya Timung, Rashmi Sonar, and Rashmi Sarma, are students of Raghunath Choudhary Hindi High School in Guwahati’s Birkuchi locality.
Their disappearance raised concerns among their families and the community, amidst a recent surge in missing cases involving minor girls.
Initial reports revealed that the girls left their homes on February 17, citing visits to friends’ houses.
However, when they failed to return home, their families grew worried and filed a missing complaint at Pragjyotishpur Police Station.
Further anxiety arose when it was discovered that one of the girls’ cell phones was switched off.
The situation prompted immediate action from authorities, leading to the successful rescue of the girls.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two young females, Manalicha Begum (17) and Jubli Begum (12), went missing from the Lakhimpur Bihpuria neighbourhood of Meramukh in Narayanpur last February 17.
Sources indicate that the girls reported being victims of a human trafficking ring in Kerala.
Authorities are urging vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities or missing persons cases to ensure the safety and security of all residents, particularly minors, in the region.
