Guwahati: Authorities in Assam’s Sribhumi district have filed a police case against a doctor accused of selling an infant to a couple in an illegal adoption scheme.
The incident came to light following an investigation by the district’s Child Protection Unit (CPU).
According to a CPU official, they received information about the alleged illegal adoption four to five days ago.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the doctor had falsified documents to facilitate the sale of the newborn to a local couple in exchange for a significant sum of money.
Preliminary findings indicate that the mother, an unmarried woman, approached the doctor around four months ago seeking an abortion.
However, the doctor declined the procedure, citing the advanced stage of her pregnancy, which was nearly five months at the time.
A few days ago, the doctor performed a cesarean delivery at a private hospital and subsequently handed over the infant to the couple using forged paperwork.

The CPU has since rescued the baby and placed the child in the care of the Sribhumi Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
“We have registered a police case against the doctor and others involved. Efforts are underway to apprehend the doctor, who is currently absconding,” the CPU official said.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the full extent of the illegal adoption scheme and identify all those involved.
