GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone of the region’s largest private investment project in Jagiroad, Morigaon district of Assam on March 13.

Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, while overseeing preparations for the foundation-laying ceremony in his constituency, said that the ₹27,000 crore Tata semiconductor plant would be established at the Hindustan Paper Corporation’s erstwhile Nagaon Paper Mill premises.

Taking to a micro-blogging website, Minister Hazarika shared, “On 13th March 2024, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji will lay the foundation stone of North East India’s biggest private investment project – the ₹27,000 cr Tata semiconductor plant in my constituency, Jagi Road. Reviewed arrangements today.”

The announcement follows the Centre’s declaration on February 29, unveiling plans for three semiconductor plants in India, one of which will be situated in Assam.

Earlier, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored the significance of this decision, stating that the construction of the three semiconductor units would commence within the next 100 days.

The Assam-based unit is projected to produce an impressive 48 million chips per day, marking a notable milestone for the Northeast.

Addressing a function in Guwahati on December 9, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed Tata Electronics Ltd’s proposal to establish an electronic centre in Jagiroad, Morigaon district.

“With an outlay of about Rs 40,000 crore, this initiative by Tata Electronics Ltd signifies a monumental leap forward for Assam’s burgeoning tech sector,” remarked Chief Minister Sarma, highlighting the project’s potential to spur economic growth and generate employment opportunities in the region.

Moreover, the conglomerate has approached the state government to train 1,000 individuals for employment in the unit, further accentuating the transformative impact of the venture.

“We used to always wonder why the electronics and IT industry did not come to our state. Now, that is changing,” expressed Chief Minister Sarma, reflecting on the promising trajectory of Assam’s technological advancement.
