GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility, valued at Rs 27,000 crore, in Jagiroad, Morigaon district on Wednesday. This plant is among the three semiconductor projects, worth approximately ₹1.25 lakh crore, initiated by the Prime Minister today.
Addressing the audience virtually, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the semiconductor plant to the nation’s youth, highlighting its crucial role in driving innovation and economic growth.
“The semiconductor plant holds immense potential for our youth. It is not merely a facility for chip manufacturing but a gateway to a plethora of opportunities,” he said.
Highlighting India’s growing startup ecosystem, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that the initiative would spur the emergence of new startups dedicated to semiconductor manufacturing, positioning India as a global leader in the industry.
“India boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem globally. This initiative will further catalyse the growth of startups, especially in semiconductor manufacturing, benefiting our youth. The Northeast, in particular, will soon emerge as a powerhouse of development in Southeast Asia,” he added.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking at the event, extended gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Tata Sons for selecting Assam as a site for the semiconductor plant.
He recalled previous discussions with Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, revealing the company’s interest in the state’s industrial potential.
“Today marks a new dawn for Assam’s industries. The foundation stone laying for three semiconductor plants across the country, including Assam, is a proof to our state’s growing prominence in the industrial landscape,” he said.
Chief Minister Sarma also expressed optimism about the transformation of the Hindustan Paper Corporation’s former Nagaon Paper Mill premises in Jagiroad into a hub for industries, symbolising a shift towards industrial growth in the state.
The two other semiconductor projects, the Semiconductor Fabrication Facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) and Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility at Sanand, are in Gujarat.
