Guwahati: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted to the Gauhati High Court, demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into the mysterious death of Assam’s popular singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

Filed by Abhijit Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah on Tuesday, the petition alleges serious irregularities, possible criminal conspiracy, and misuse of official authority linked to the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death.

It seeks judicial oversight to ensure the probe remains impartial and free from external influence.

The petition specifically raises questions about the role of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg, who was reportedly involved in the North East India Festival where Zubeen Garg was scheduled to perform.

The event, being largely cultural and commercial, falls outside official police duties, prompting concerns about whether DSP Garg had proper authorisation to participate.

Petitioners have asked the court to clarify the legal basis for his involvement.

Further scrutiny is being directed at Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival’s chief organiser and younger brother of former DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, who also serves as the State Chief Information Commissioner.

The PIL points to Mahanta’s political and bureaucratic connections, warning that they could potentially influence the investigation.

Mahanta remains in police custody over alleged links to Garg’s death.

Amid rising public pressure, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax Department will soon examine financial irregularities connected to Mahanta.

He assured that the state government is coordinating with central agencies to ensure a professional and transparent inquiry.

Commenting on Mahanta’s background, the Chief Minister noted that he was known for cultivating ties with influential figures.

“Many photographs on his phone include politicians, journalists, and others, but these have no relevance to the current probe,” Sarma said, adding that records of his travels, including trips to Bangkok, are unrelated to Garg’s death.

The PIL has heightened calls for accountability and clarity in the investigation, reflecting widespread public concern over the singer’s untimely demise.
