Guwahati: Renowned orthopaedic surgeon and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay has been appointed as the President of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced.
Dr. Sanjay, a globally acclaimed surgeon, researcher, and academician, will lead AIIMS Guwahati with a focus on strengthening healthcare delivery, medical education, and research in the Northeast.
His appointment comes as part of the Centre’s initiative to expand advanced healthcare infrastructure beyond metropolitan cities.
AIIMS Guwahati, one of 19 functional AIIMS in the country, was conceptualised under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of improving access to quality healthcare and medical education across India.
The foundation stone for the institute was laid on May 26, 2017, by the Prime Minister to address regional disparities in tertiary care services in the Northeast.
Dr. Sanjay brings over four decades of experience in clinical practice, research, and teaching.
His pioneering work in orthopaedics has earned him recognition in the India Book of Records, Limca Book of Records, and Guinness World Records.
His research has been widely published in reputed medical journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, International Orthopaedics, and Journal of Hand Surgery.

Having received advanced training and fellowships in Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, the USA, and Russia, Dr. Sanjay has shared his expertise in more than 50 countries.
He was conferred the Padma Shri in 2021 for his distinguished contribution to medicine and social service.
Officials expressed confidence that his leadership will further AIIMS Guwahati’s role as a hub for cutting-edge medical care and academic excellence in the region.
