Guwahati: More than 20 lakh farmers in Assam have received financial aid amounting to Rs. 422.05 crore under the 20th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, officials said on Sunday.

The amount was credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts on Saturday, coinciding with a nationwide disbursal event launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi.

According to the state Agriculture Department, around 20.31 lakh eligible farmer families in Assam benefited from this instalment.

The PM-KISAN scheme, introduced by the central government on February 24, 2019, aims to provide income support of Rs. 6,000 per year to eligible farming families, distributed in three instalments of Rs. 2,000 each.

It is considered one of the government’s flagship welfare programmes and the world’s largest direct benefit transfer initiative.

Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora shared the update on social media, noting that the support reflects the Centre’s consistent commitment to the welfare of farmers.

He said nearly 20.31 lakh farmers across Assam had received the amount directly in their accounts, calling it a sign of dignity, security, and prosperity for the state’s farming community.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also praised the initiative, saying that over the years, the scheme has served as a vital tool in empowering farmers and acknowledging their contributions to the nation.

He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his continued efforts in strengthening the rural economy through such targeted interventions.
