GUWAHATI: In commemoration of Earth Day 2024, outreach programmes were organised for school children across the districts of Dibrugarh and Kokrajhar in Assam, as well as in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, on Monday.
At Kakojan Habi LP School, located near the Dehing Patkai National Park, school children participated in an awareness programme facilitated by Aaranyak and the British Asian Trust, in collaboration with the Dehing Patkai National Park authority and with support from the Darwin Initiative (Biodiversity Challenge Funds).
Simultaneously, another outreach programme was conducted by the Aaranyak team for students in the Kachugaon Division of the Raimona National Park’s central range.
This initiative, organised in collaboration with the Raimona National Park authority and the Wildlife Trust of India, aimed to educate students about environmental conservation and wildlife protection.
In Dibrugarh, twenty-seven students took part in a drawing contest focusing on various aspects of nature and the harmful effects of single-use plastic, along with discussions led by Aaranyak team members on plastic waste management and coexistence with elephants.
Similarly, 20 students participated in an outreach event held in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya.
These areas, facing conflicts between humans and wild elephants, are being addressed through multifaceted approaches by Aaranyak to mitigate such conflicts.
Earth Day, celebrated globally on April 22 each year, aims to raise public awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainability.
This year’s theme, “Planet vs Plastic”, underscores the importance of combating plastic pollution and preserving our planet’s health.
As these outreach programmes continue to empower young minds and communities, they serve as reminders of the collective responsibility to protect and cherish our environment.
