GUWAHATI: In a significant breakthrough, the Assam Police has successfully solved the series of grenade attacks that rattled Jorhat, Tinsukia, and Sivasagar between November 22 and December 14.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh announced the development via social media on Thursday, revealing that all the assailants involved in the attacks have been apprehended, and the motorcycles used in the incidents have been recovered.

Adding that all the perpetrators were “instigated through online platforms, DGP Singh wrote, “In an excellent operation that lasted weeks, the three crimes of grenade lobbing by a banned organisation in Tinsukia, Sivasagar and Jorhat have been cracked and perpetrators arrested and motorcycles used recovered. People instigating these perpetrators through online platforms have also been identified and would be brought to book whichever corner they are in.”

DGP Singh further added that evidence would be presented in appropriate court of law in due course.

The revelation follows Assam Police’s continued crackdown on activities linked to the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).

Earlier arrests on December 19 and 17 in Guwahati’s Maligaon area were part of a broader effort to dismantle threats posed by the outfit.

On December 22, DGP Singh had declared that Assam Police will eliminate all threats posed to the state within the purview of the law.

Without explicitly mentioning the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and recent threats directed at him by the outfit, DGP Singh had highlighted that groups once based in Bangladesh are now issuing threats from camps in Myanmar.

Assam has experienced a spate of three grenade attacks in just 22 days, from November 22 to December 14.

The latest grenade explosion occurred near the Lichubari Military Camp in Jorhat district on December 14 when two assailants on motorcycles targeted the Army camp.

Prior to this, ULFA-I had executed grenade attacks in Tinsukia and Sivasagar districts on November 22 and December 9, respectively.

And in a press release on December 10, the banned outfit had claimed responsibility for the grenade blasts.
