Guwahati: A lightning strike in the remote Lampi region along the Assam-Meghalaya border claimed one life and left three others injured on Monday afternoon, officials confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as 47-year-old Mongal Ray from Gohalkona in Assam’s Kamrup district.
Eyewitnesses said Ray was inside his home when the lightning struck, killing him instantly.
Three men—Tikhor Boro, Dhaneswar Boro, and Parimal Boro—sustained injuries in the incident.
Police said the trio, all daily wage workers from Gohalkona, had gone to Lampi for work and were near Ray’s house when the strike occurred during a sudden spell of stormy weather.
Local villagers rushed the injured to Boko Primary Health Centre, nearly 35 km away.
Doctors said the men were in critical condition initially but have since stabilised and remain under observation.
Authorities have indicated they may be shifted to a higher medical facility if required.
Revenue and police officials have reached the site to complete formalities, while ex gratia assistance for the victim’s family will be provided under disaster relief norms.
The incident has shocked residents of Gohalkona, who described Ray as the primary breadwinner of his family.
The tragedy comes amid frequent lightning-related casualties reported across Assam and Meghalaya during the ongoing monsoon.
Disaster management authorities have repeatedly urged people to stay indoors during thunderstorms, but experts point to a lack of protective infrastructure in rural and remote areas like Lampi.
Local organisations have called for urgent improvements to emergency response systems in the region.
