GUWAHATI: In a move to break new grounds in sustainable technology, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati to produce green activated carbon.
The two recently inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) centred on the development of cutting-edge technology to produce marketable grade green activated carbon from bamboo dust – a by-product generated as bamboo chips are prepared for NRL’s 2nd Generation Bio-Refinery, operated under its JV company, Assam Bio-Refinery Private Limited.
The collaboration envisages the establishment of a production plant, boasting a capacity of 5 MT/batch, tasked with producing green activated carbon through the pyrolysis of bamboo dust.
Apart from that the shared R&D venture also sets its sights on the creation of top-tier chemically activated carbon. Once developed, this high-grade carbon promises vast application potential, stretching across pharmaceutical, electronics, and mining sectors.
Sealing the promising partnership, the memorandum was signed by Nikunja Borthakur, Senior Chief General Manager (Corporate Affairs) of NRL, and Prof G Krishnamoorthy, Dean IISI, IIT Guwahati. The event saw attendance from several distinguished guests, including Sanjay Choudhuri, Director (Finance) of NRL, and Prof. Senthilmurugan Subbiah of IITG, alongside other senior dignitaries from both institutions.
This industry-academia union not only holds promise for groundbreaking innovations but is also a proof to the synergy that can be achieved through collaboration. The project is set to bolster the capabilities of both NRL and IIT Guwahati, facilitating a two-way flow of crucial data and insights.
