GUWAHATI: In a concerning development, 11 students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam have been diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB), as per reports emerging on Tuesday.
The outbreak of Tuberculosis has primarily affected students residing in boys’ hostels 9A, 9B, and 9C over the past two days, raising alarm among the authorities.
Given the contagious nature of the disease, the NIT Silchar authorities have swiftly issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to combat the spread.
All students, staff, and visitors are now mandated to wear masks while on campus and have asked hostellers to undergo TB-detection tests.
Taking strict measures, the institute has issued an order prohibiting outside food in the campus and has urged the students not to consume food from stalls outside of the campus.
Tuberculosis, caused by a type of bacteria, primarily affects the lungs and spreads through the air when infected individuals cough, sneeze, or spit.
While TB is both preventable and curable, it remains a significant global health concern, with approximately a quarter of the world’s population estimated to have been infected with TB bacteria.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
