GUWAHATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) addressed 56 cases of human rights violations in the Northeast during its two-day camp sitting in Guwahati.
Chaired by NHRC’s Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, the camp concluded on Friday, drawing participation from various NHRC members and senior officers.
Initially, a panel of the Commission headed by Mishra along with members Dnyaneshwar M Mulay and Rajiv Jain, had aimed at addressing over 40 pending cases in the region.
During the sitting, the commission deliberated on a range of cases, including alleged land division violations in Arunachal Pradesh, the rape of a tribal girl in Assam, negligence leading to casualties during a railway project in Manipur, and issues related to violence in Manipur.
Another case highlighted the alleged failure of Arunachal Pradesh to compensate families affected by a construction project.

Following the case hearings, the NHRC engaged with NGOs and human rights defenders (HRDs), acknowledging their efforts in the Northeastern states.
The NHRC also held a meeting with chief secretaries and DGPs of the states, urging them to submit action taken reports on advisories issued by the commission, covering areas such as mental health, police encounters, bonded labour, Right to Food and Safety, ocular trauma, prevention of suicides in judicial and police custody, and manual scavenging.
State officials were directed to ensure timely submission of reports, especially in cases pending before the commission.
The NHRC highlighted the need for state governments to enhance infrastructure in the State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs) and expedite the filling of vacant positions to ensure the smooth functioning of SHRCs.
Earlier on November 16, the commission had begun its two-day sitting camp with a national-level conference, focusing on sensitising local self-governments on various dimensions of human rights.
Chairpersons of the state human rights commissions of Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Sikkim had attended the conference that was themed “Advancing Human Rights through Local Self Governments”.
