Purabi Dairy, marked National Milk Day on Thursday by launching its first line of traditional Indian sweets — Purabi Kalakand and Purabi Milk Cake.

The new mithai range will be available at the Purabi Parlour in Panjabari, all Purabi milk booths across Guwahati and select grocery stores in the city.

Purabi Mithai is produced by the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) and marketed by North East Dairy and Foods Limited, a joint venture between the Assam government and the National Dairy Development Board.

National Milk Day is observed annually on the birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien, the pioneer of India’s White Revolution.

NEDFL managing director Satya Brata Bose said the launch marks an important milestone for Purabi as it expands its product portfolio, adding that the brand aims to offer fresh and hygienically prepared traditional sweets.

WAMUL managing director Sameer Kumar Parida said the initiative will help increase milk procurement and boost earnings for dairy farmers, in line with the state’s efforts to strengthen the dairy sector.

At the state-level National Milk Day programme held at the College of Veterinary Sciences, Khanapara, the Assam government felicitated five Purabi Dairy farmers for their contribution to the sector.

Those honoured were Majar Ali of Bongaigaon, Mani Bala Das of Hojai, Tajer Rahman of Darrang, Mina Chetry of Nagaon and Som Bahadur Chetry of Hojai.

Nearly 60 Purabi farmers attended the event, which was graced by senior officials from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Assam Veterinary and Fishery University and the Dairy Development Directorate.

Purabi representatives congratulated the awardees and said the cooperative’s ongoing efforts—from farmer support and livelihood programmes to processing upgrades and retail expansion—continue to drive growth in Assam’s dairy ecosystem.
