Kohima: Nagaland Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Temjen Imna Along, on Sunday confirmed that students from the state studying at Kaziranga University in Jorhat, Assam, are safe after unrest erupted over remarks made by a Naga student about the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
The incident, which began around 8:30 pm on Saturday and continued into the early hours of Sunday, reportedly stemmed from comments by a B.Tech student that offended local sentiments.
The student has since been relocated to a safe house, and authorities confirmed that the remaining 300–400 Naga students at the university are unharmed.
Minister Along expressed appreciation to the Assam government, local police, and the university administration for their swift action and coordination with Nagaland authorities to contain the situation.
“The situation is now under control. There were no serious injuries, and the incident did not escalate further despite the initial anger,” he said.
Acknowledging that the remarks were inappropriate, the minister urged Naga students in Assam and residents back home to exercise caution on social media.
“Comments made in anger or thoughtlessness can cause distress. Late Zubeen Garg was very close to the hearts of the people of Assam, and insensitive remarks are unacceptable,” Along said.

On possible disciplinary measures, he described the matter as sensitive and said Kaziranga University is unlikely to take severe action.
The minister added that the student would soon be handed over to his family and suggested that a temporary return home might be advisable.
Along also appealed to the public to maintain understanding and goodwill.
“The people of Assam have always been like elder brothers to Nagaland. While there was anger, we hope they continue to support and care for the Naga community,” he said, thanking university authorities for ensuring the safety of all Naga students.
