Guwahati: A sudden, thunderous noise startled residents across various parts of Assam’s Golaghat district on Friday afternoon, prompting swift action and investigation by local authorities.
Initial findings suggest the unsettling sound may have been caused by a sonic boom, a rare but powerful acoustic event that occurs when an object, typically an aircraft, breaks the sound barrier.
According to a statement released by the Golaghat district administration on its official Facebook page, the loud noise was distinctly heard around 3:35 pm in several locations, including Merapani, Sarupathar, and nearby areas.
Authorities, including both police and civil officials, launched an immediate inquiry into the source and nature of the disturbance.
Based on the magnitude and characteristics of the sound, officials currently believe it may have originated from a high-speed aircraft or object traveling faster than the speed of sound—thus creating a sonic boom.
“A sonic boom is a powerful sound wave generated when an object travels through the air at supersonic speed,” the administration explained.
“Judging by the intensity of the noise, the most probable cause appears to be such an event.”
The administration reassured the public that there is no reason for alarm and urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
