Guwahati: Assam down town University expressed its profound delight at the honour of hosting Governor of Assam Gulab Chand Kataria, alongside the esteemed presence of the legendary maestro Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.
As a university dedicated to promoting cultural interaction and creative enrichment, the Assam down town University presented Pundit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt’s extraordinary ability on the Mohan Veena, which has received international praise.
Pundit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt’s long career, which includes distinctions like the Grammy Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri, and Padma Bhushan, acts as a source of inspiration for both young musicians and aficionados alike.
He is known for other fusion and pan-cultural collaborations with Western artists such as Taj Mahal, Béla Fleck and Jerry Douglas. Exposure such as an appearance on the 2004 Crossroads Guitar Festival, organized by Eric Clapton, allowed his playing to reach a larger audience.
The Assam down town University, the largest private university in Northeast India, takes great satisfaction in supporting such cultural convergences, which not only enrich our academic environment but also contribute to the cultural fabric of the community.
Pundit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt was also happy interacting with Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, management, faculty members and students of the Assam down town University.
“I am really happy to see that this university in Guwahati is working really hard, and that too, with all sincerity, to preserve the rich culture of the Indian classical music,” Pundit Bhatt told Northeast News in Guwahati.
The legendry maestro said music plays an important role in shaping the personalities of the young students, and hoped that the pro-active role of the Assam down town University will create an ecosystem of tradition and culture in and around the university.
The musician had all praise for Dr. N.N. Dutta, the chancellor of the Assam down town University, and said that he is happy to see that a medico-turned academician did so much for development of the higher education sector in Northeast India.
