Guwahati: After more than six months on the run, two individuals who escaped from Nongpoh Civil Hospital in Meghalaya last November have been apprehended in a joint operation by Ri-Bhoi and North Garo Hills Police.
Both had been living under false identities in Assam’s Goalpara district.
Ri-Bhoi Police, with the assistance of North Garo Hills Police, arrested Sunil Das (29) on May 29, 2025.
Das, a resident of Dudhnoi in Assam’s Goalpara, was serving a rigorous imprisonment for life sentence under the POCSO Act.
He escaped from Nongpoh Civil Hospital on November 15, 2024. He was serving a rigorous imprisonment for a life sentence under the POCSO Act in connection with the Nongpoh Women PS Case No. 07(12)2018.
This marks Das’s second conviction; he had previously completed a sentence in Nongpoh PS Case No. 48(03)2022. He was in judicial custody at the time of his escape.
The second escapee, Pappu Chettri alias Robert Chettri (32), an Under Trial Prisoner (UTP), was apprehended on June 3, 2025.
Chettri, a resident of Mawsyntai Village at Nongpoh in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi, was allegedly involved in Nongpoh Women PS Case No. 59(10)2019, which includes charges under Sections 341, 363, and 376(2)(I) of the IPC. He also escaped from Nongpoh Civil Hospital on November 15, 2024, along with Sunil Das.

According to police, both Das and Chettri had been living in the Goalpara district using fake identities to evade capture since their escape.
According to police, Sunil Das has already been sent to jail. Pappu Chhetri will be produced in produce him in Nongpoh court on June 4, after which he is expected to be remanded to judicial custody.
