Guwahati: Mega celebrations to mark 400th birth anniversary of legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan began on Friday with march past by security agencies across Assam.
Police, Army, para-military forces and NCC cadets displayed colourful march past in all district headquarters and major towns on Friday in Assam.
Celebration for 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Borphukan was launched by former president Ram Nath Kovind in February this year.
The closing ceremony of the 400th birth anniversary Lachit Borphukan will be held from November 23 to 25 in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the official function scheduled to be held on November 25 in New Delhi.
Lachit Borphukan is known for his heroic victory at the Battle of Saraighat on the Brahmaputra in 1671 that thwarted an attempt by the Mughal forces to capture Assam.
Assam government is in consultation with the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, to organise a special talk on Lachit Borphukan, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The NDA has been awarding its best cadet with the Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal every year since 1999 and a statue of him was later established in the complex.
A documentary on Borphukan has also been made by the state government, which will be telecast through national and international media to popularise the achievements of the Ahom commander.
