Morigaon (Assam): Two newly formed Eco-Development Committees of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary—Hadukpar and Rajamayong—joined hands with the sanctuary’s Range Staff on Sunday to launch a major awareness drive against plastic pollution and the spread of parthenium in Greater Mayong.
The initiative, aimed at protecting the environment, wildlife, and human health ahead of the upcoming tourist season, began with an inauguration by Range Officer Pranjal Baruah in the presence of EDC presidents Manoj Nath and Dr. Utpal Nath.
Over 200 participants, including residents of Rajamayong village and Forest Department personnel, took part in the drive, clearing a significant quantity of single-use plastic from picnic spots and along a 2.5-km stretch of the Pobitora-Kamarpur road.
The campaign sought to encourage tourists, shopkeepers, tour operators, hotels, and resorts to minimize plastic usage and ensure proper disposal using permanent waste collection units recently installed by the Morigaon Jila Parishad under Mayong Gaon Panchayat.

Supporting the broader waste management approach, the Gaon Panchayat authority installed glow signs, banners, and signages to educate visitors about maintaining the sanctuary’s pristine habitat.
Pobitora, home to the world’s highest density of one-horned rhinos with a population of over 107, attracts a large number of visitors every season.
The resort Mystique Mayong also participated in the initiative, showcasing its commitment to solid waste management and disposal rules.
