GUWAHATI: In a significant victory in its fight against drug menace in Assam, the Cachar Police seized heroin worth Rs 105 crore on Saturday.
The operation intercepted a consignment of 10.333 kg of heroin at Silchar’s Ghungoor Bypass Road.
Three individuals, identified as Lalatolanzoba (31), Malasaomengi (36) and Daneil Lalsangma (32).
All the three traffickers are residents of Mizoram, the police informed.
The contraband was concealed within hidden compartments of a four-wheeler.
Police officials revealed that the heroin was carefully packaged in 60 soap cases and nine large packets that were seized during the operation.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to express his satisfaction and commitment to combating the issue.
“Imagine the countless lives saved through this seizure. We are committed to working 24/7 to ensure our youths do not fall into this trap,” he said.
This seizure underscores the prevalent problem of drug trafficking in the region.
It forms a crucial part of broader efforts to dismantle drug networks and safeguard the safety and well-being of Assam’s citizens.
This marks the second major drug bust in the state in over a month.
Previously, in the largest-ever drug haul in Assam, heroin worth Rs 210 crore was seized in the Cachar district, with one individual arrested in connection with the operation.
In a joint operation involving the Special Task Force (STF) and Cachar Police, a vehicle from Mizoram was intercepted in Sayeedpur in the Silchar police station area.
According to STF Inspector General Parthasarathi Mahanta, the vehicle contained more than 21.5 kg of heroin, with 18 kg in its purest form requiring further processing and 3.5 kg as the finished product.
Mahanta estimated the value of the seized drugs to be around Rs 210 crore in the international black market.
Legal procedures have commenced, and the seized vehicle is under police custody.
