Sivasagar (Assam): A man was killed in police firing after he allegedly attempted to attack police personnel with a machete while they were responding to a family-related disturbance in Assam’s Sivasagar district, an official said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at Bar Diroi village under Demow Police Station. The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Ranjit Pandav.
According to the police, Pandav was creating a disturbance in an intoxicated state in the village.
A local resident, Martin Pandav, along with his wife, initially tried to pacify him but were allegedly attacked with a machete, leaving both seriously injured.
Following information from villagers, police rushed to the spot.

“When the police arrived, the man chased the personnel and tried to attack them with the machete. In order to defend themselves, the police fired a single round,” the officer said.
Pandav, along with the injured couple, was taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.
Doctors declared Pandav dead on arrival due to bullet injuries, while the couple remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.
Police also said it is alleged that the deceased had a history of domestic abuse involving his wife and five children, who were staying at a relative’s house at the time of the incident.
