Guwahati: A man who made derogatory comments about Assam’s history and traditions on social media has issued an apology, asserting that he did not intend to cause any harm.

Abhishek Kar, the individual behind the controversial remarks, is now facing legal action, with a police case filed against him for spreading misinformation in a video posted on a YouTube channel.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Kar, who describes himself as a “trader, investor, and mentor” on his YouTube channel, expressed regret on Saturday and clarified that his comments were not meant to offend anyone.

He assured the public that he would verify any “secondary information” in the future before sharing it.

The comments, which were made during a podcast, prompted backlash from the Assam government.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) responded to the incident on Friday, condemning the remarks and stating that appropriate action would be taken.

The CMO posted on X (formerly Twitter), “A video from a YouTube channel, named Riya Upreti, is in circulation where an individual named Abhishek Kar is seen making unacceptable comments on Assam’s history and traditions. Appropriate action may be initiated against the said individual for spreading misinformation.”

In response, Director General of Police GP Singh assured that lawful action would be taken.

“Noted Sir. Lawful action shall be taken. Warm regards,” Singh replied on social media.

On Saturday, Additional DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that an FIR had been filed against Kar.

“He has made the offensive remarks and we have started our due process of investigation,” Gupta said.

In the video, Kar made claims about a village in Assam where tantric practices are prevalent, alleging that women possess the power to transform people into goats and then back into humans.

Kar later apologized for his comments in a response to the CMO’s post on X, stating: “Apologies to people, @CMOfficeAssam, @gpsinghips, and every concerned party who was hurt. The intent wasn’t to hurt anyone and it will be kept in mind going forward that such incidents don’t happen again.”

He also promised to be more cautious with his research and to ensure greater accuracy in the future when sharing secondary information.
