He became the only nominee for the post till Thursday, the last day for filing nominations.
Saikia, a former BJP national general secretary, is the second-time MP from the Darrang-Udalguri (previously Mangaldai) constituency.
He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019 and was subsequently re-elected from the Darrang-Udalguri constituency in 2024.
The chief minister lauded outgoing state BJP president Kalita for his leadership and said, “Under him, we have won the Lok Sabha polls, byelections, municipal elections and also enrolled over 60 lakh primary members.”
Sarma said Kalita, who had taken over as the state party chief in June 2021, was not in the fray as he had expressed a desire to contest the next assembly polls.
Currently serving as the national general secretary of the BJP, Saikia has previously held roles in the student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, affiliated to the RSS.
