New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended greetings to the people of Assam on the occasion of Lachit Diwas and paid rich tributes to Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, whose leadership is credited with defending Assam from Mughal expansion in the 17th century.
Observed on November 24 every year, the day commemorates the birth anniversary of the legendary commander and remembers his decisive role in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat — a moment in history that cemented the Ahom army’s victory through naval warfare and tactical brilliance.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister described Lachit Borphukan as an enduring symbol of bravery, patriotism and leadership.
He said the general’s courage remains a guiding light for the nation, praising his unwavering duty to protect his land and people.
Modi also said that Lachit Borphukan’s fearless spirit reflects the essence of Assam, noting that heroes like him continue to inspire India’s resolve and strength.
