GUWAHATI: To express solidarity with the nationwide 24-hour strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in response to the tragic death of a doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital in West Bengal, medical professionals and staff of down town hospital held a peaceful candlelight vigil on Saturday.
A post-graduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminal hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
The Kolkata rape case has brought medical services to a standstill as students and doctors continue to demand justice for the resident PG doctor.
“This is not just a loss for the medical community; it is a profound loss for humanity,” said Dr. Udayan Barua, Medical Superintendent of down town hospital.
“We are deeply distressed by the recent event in Kolkata, where a healthcare worker endured such unacceptable violence. Our thoughts are with her family and the broader medical community. We are resolute in our commitment to ensuring the safety and respect of all healthcare workers,” said Dr. Shikha Rani Choudhury, Deputy Medical Superintendent of down town hospital.

The down town hospital condemns this horrific incident in the strongest terms and reaffirms its dedication to advocating for the safety and dignity of medical professionals across the country.
Standing firmly behind this call for justice, the hospital is urging the authorities to take swift and decisive measures to ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated.
The Indian Medical Association has also appealed for a written commitment from the central government to implement the Central Protection Act (CPA) for healthcare professionals, including the formation of an authentic body with national representation to ensure their safety.
