GUWAHATI: Succumbing to pressures from Karbi organisations, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) authorities terminated services of 10 sarkari gaon burahas (SGB) with immediate effect on the night of February 20.
The KAAC said that the decision was taken “due to dereliction of duty, as they failed to report to the authority regarding massive encroachment on PGR/VGR land in Kheroni under Donkamukam Revenue Circle, and under Phuloni Circle.”
“We decided to terminate all sarkari gaon buras of the PGR and VGRs with immediate effect. We will also seek assistance from the Assam government for the eviction drive as the law and order is with them,” said chief executive member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang told reporters.
The termination comes after a meeting of KAAC with all political and non-political organisations of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts to discuss the status of the proposed Grazing Reserve Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) in the two hill districts in Diphu on Tuesday.
“We held a three-hour-long discussion with the representatives of all political parties, and student organizations on the PGR and VGR issue. We have decided to launch a massive eviction drive in the PGR and VGR as per guidelines of the Supreme Court judgement passed in 2011. We will issue an eviction notice to all encroachers from tomorrow,” Ronghang added.
