GUWAHATI: Assam’s largest sporting event to date, Khel Maharan, has garnered over 12 lakh registrations till date. Scheduled to kick off on November 1, the initiative is aimed at fostering a sports culture in the state and discovering sporting talent.

Making the announcement on Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to a popular micro-blogging platform and wrote, “Khel Maharan will be Assam’s biggest sporting extravaganza till date which will be played across 3,000 playfields.”

Earlier on Friday, during a meeting at the District Commissioner’s office to assess the preparations for the games, District Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and Mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Mrigen Sarania, urged the people of Kamrup Metropolitan district to actively participate in the event.

During the meeting, Jha personally registered his name on the designated portal for volleyball in the above 19-year category. Meanwhile, Mayor Mrigen Sarania had already enrolled his name on the portal.

They also extended a special call to individuals of all age groups interested in sports to register their names and contribute to the state government’s noble initiative. They particularly encouraged the younger generation with a passion for sports to seize this golden opportunity.

Registration for the tournament is currently underway and interested individuals can download the Khel Maharan app from the Google Play Store or register on the official portal, www.dsywassam.com/khel, by October 15.

District-level tournaments will be hosted at prominent sports facilities across respective regions, while five key cities – Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Kokrajhar, and Diphu – have been designated to host the state-level finals. This strategic decision is aimed at providing a significant boost to aspiring athletes from all corners of the state.

The sports festival will feature five different sports – Athletics (100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m), Football, Volleyball, Kabaddi, and Kho Kho. Matches will be organised into four categories – Under-19 (Men), Under-19 (Women), Above 19 Years (Men), and Above 19 Years (Women).
